The gospel of John is different than the other gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

John’s gospel is to convince his audience that Jesus is the Son of GOD.

  • John 10:36 it records Jesus confession that He is the Son of GOD.

John also writes about a few miracles of Christ not included in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. these miracles fed into his overarching point that Jesus is the Son of God.

  • We shall spend some time on that point next week, but this week I want to spend some time examining the scriptures concerning how John began his writings.

John starts his message with “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.”

John makes Five distinct and powerful statements:

  • · In the beginning was the Word

  • · The WORD was with GOD.

  • · The Word was GOD.

  • · Through Him all things were made

  • · In Him was life and light for humanity

John was telling the story about Jesus however his focus was to convince his audience that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of GOD. He did this by using a metaphor that Jesus was the WORD. That got the attention of his audience (Greeks and Christian Jews)

First Jews understood that GOD spoke the universe into existence. They understood the power of the spoken WORD.

Genesis 1

  • 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

  • 6 And God said, “Let there be a vault or separation between the waters to separate water from water.”

  • 9 And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.”

  • 11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land.

  • 14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years,

  • 20 And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth.

  • 24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock,

  • 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule.

God didn't need to grab anything to create the universe, all HE did was speak it into existence.

Second, John audience included Greeks who were not familiar with the theory that GOD spoke things into existence. So, John used the Greek word "Logos" which is a reference for the cosmic reason behind the universe. It was defined as a mysterious power that always exists and that makes things happen. Greeks understood this and accepted that Jesus was a part of that mystic power.

So, with the use of the word “Word,” John was able to communicate to both, distinct audience to convey that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of GOD.

Let's be clear; Jesus is the Word.

He is the Written Word of God - is the personification of the written and spoken word, the explicit communication of God to humanity (Eph 3:9 - And to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God, who created all things."

He is the Gospel Message - The word of God is also the "good news 1st Peter states "People are like grass their beauty is like ta flower in the field. The grass withers and the flowers fades. But the word of the Lord remains forever. And this is the word that was proclaimed to you."

The Word is the Word of God which connects us to God; it shall save us during the time we cross over to the other side.

Heb 4:12 "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. "

The book of John was written to prove that Jesus is the Son of God.

1. He existed in the very beginning

2. He co-existed with God the Father. The word was with God. Jesus is one the Trinity. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit...all are God because they are united and one.

3. He created the world. Psalms 33:6 "God made the worlds by a word. Heb 1:2 "without Him nothing was made, from the highest angel to the lowest worm.

4. He is the creator of life and light. In Him was light.

5. We become the children of God. 1 John 3:2 "Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.”

· The light that shines is incomprehensible to humanity without help from the Holy Spirit.

· The Word shines through the darkness, is the light that shines in the hearts of men.

Its power produces substantial change;

o Change in the way a person lives.

o Change in the values system.

o Change in how to interact with others.

o Change in our priorities to seek after GOD first.

o Change in our way of life.

o Change in our approach toward love, peace, justice, faith, and hope.

In Heb 1:1-4 it states " “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs."

God is constantly speaking to his creation. Whether through HIS prophets or though the Holy Scriptures and/or through HIS Son, God's timeless efforts to communicate HIS will to HIS people is endless.

HE continues to speak today through HIS Word. Vs 3 says HE sustains all things by His powerful word. It is GOD's words that sustain us if we feed on it.

Accept the Word of GOD. Doing so would mean that you accept Jesus as your LORD and Savior.
